A popular Saudi preacher with an online following of more than two million has been banned from writing on Twiitter after a Saudi court convicting him of jeopardizing public order, AFP reported.

The cleric, Awad al-Qarni was previously accused of links to the banned Muslim Brotherhood and faced fines of about $27,000.

Qarni himself confirmed the conviction on his @awadalqarni Twitter account, writing "I am prevented from writing," before posting a thank you message to his followers. He added that he had appealed the case, which was made without an arrest.

In 2010 Qarni was also tried in absentia by an Egyptian court on charges of funding the Muslim Brotherhood, which has been declared a "terrorist" organization by Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.
