The International Women's Forum has named Dr. Amal Zureikat as one of this year’s recipients of the prestigious 'Women Who Make a Difference' award.

Dr. Zureikat, founder and chairperson of the Jordanian branch of Operation Smile, received the award at an international gathering in San Francisco on Oct 26.

Operation Smile is a global medical children charity that has treated thousands of children born with facial deformities.

From its Jordan base, the organisation has also treated hundreds of Palestinian and Iraqi children, helping to raise hope and awareness about the prospects for curing children deformities in the region.

The Women Who Make a Difference award is given annually to women of “exceptional leadership” whose achievements have helped overcome barriers to women advancement.

Along with Dr Zureikat, this year’s ten recipients include Denise Morrison, president and chief executive officer of the renowned American manufacturer Campbell Soup, Premier Paula Cox, the head of government in Bermuda and Nyamko Ana Sabuni, Sweden’s minister for gender equality.

A graduate of the University of Cairo, Dr Zureikat is the first non-American woman to obtain the American Board of Periodontology.  She is president of the Jordanian Periodontal Society, but her activities extend beyond promotion of an international standard of health care in Jordan.

By royal decree, Dr. Sharaiha was appointed in 2003 as a member of the board of trustees for the newly established National Centre for Human Rights, a position she held for four years.

Founded in 1982 in the United States to promote women leaders, the International Women's Forum has branches and affiliates in dozens of countries, including Jordan, and a membership of over 5,000.

Dr Zureikat is married and has four children.
