Israeli premier Benjamin Netanyahu’s hernia surgery was successful, but he requires further rest for a few days to complete his recovery, doctors said.

Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon temporarily took Netanyahu’s place during the overnight, hour-long surgery, Netanyahu’s office disclosed in a press statement.

The statement said Yaalon discussed the release of Palestinian prisoners in a cabinet meeting on Sunday, in advance of US-brokered peace talks set to take place Wednesday in Jerusalem, according to Reuters news agency.

Yuval Weiss, Jerusalem hospital director, said the operation was precautionary and that Netanyahu should be checked out by Sunday, reported Reuters.
