A dead dolphin was discovered on the Lebanese coast, north of Beirut, in what is believed to be the fifth killing of this marine mammal by fishermen this week, according to a local animal rescue group.
The Lebanese-based Animals Pride and Freedom group said overnight Saturday on its Facebook page that a dolphin was found killed in the coastal town of Tabarja. The group added that local fishermen were killing the endangered animals using poison because "they are disturbed by their presence," as the dolphins often eat the fish caught in their nets.
"This poor dolphin, it seems, is the fifth victim. This poor dolphin is still floating between the Aqua Marina and Palapas," it said.
It called on the government to protect marine life and biodiversity in the country.
"Dolphins are not the intruders. The Ocean is their Home. Humans are the real intruders," APAF added.
