An 18-year-old student has been brought to court for allegedly stealing six pet monkeys from a farm. The accused allegedly committed the theft at night along with other unknown accomplices.
The Emirati student was charged in the Court of First Instance with theft with the use of sharp tools.
The theft was reported on February 25 last year. The farm’s owner, a 34-year-old Emirati, said in the investigation that he learnt about the theft from one of the workers there. “When I reached my farm in Al Khawaneej, I saw that the cage lock was broken by one intruder or more and the six pet monkeys that had been kept in it were gone.”
The owner told the prosecution the monkeys were worth Dh53,000 ($14,429). “When the police arrived, I handed over a video footage taken from the CCTV camera at the farm showing a suspect climbing the farm’s fence and then opening the main door for his accomplices.
“They went straight to the cage to steal the monkeys. A sharp tool was used to break the lock.”
A police lieutenant said the defendant was arrested after his DNA traces were found on paper tissues at the crime scene. The student firmly denied the theft accusations.
