More than 4,000 speeding tickets were issued in Lebanon over a period of one week, the Internal Security Forces said in a statement Monday, as the third phase of a new traffic law went into effect.
The statement said traffic officers issued 4,074 speeding tickets between May 26 and June 1.
The new traffic law, which went into effect in April, is being implemented in three phases. It divides traffic offenses into five categories, with the heaviest penalties applied to category five violations.
The third phase of the traffic law, which went into effect Monday, calls for implementation of the old traffic law, based on new fines.
Police have said the new law aims to cut road deaths in half by 2020. About 500 people are killed each year in road accidents across Lebanon.
