Khaled Al Natour, a Jordanian detained in Saudi Arabia for undisclosed reasons since January, is expected to be released soon, a Foreign Ministry official said Saturday.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Sabah Al Rafei said the ministry and Jordan’s embassy in Riyadh “are exerting huge efforts to release Natour and send him home safely”.

Rafei noted that Natour is expected to be released in the coming days upon promises from the Saudi side, without elaborating further about his whereabouts or the reasons behind his arrest.

The 27-year-old IT professional left for Saudi Arabia on January 6 on a business trip with colleagues to provide a one-month training course to employees at a Saudi IT company, according to his family.

Upon his arrival at the airport, he was arrested for reasons that are still unknown even to the Jordanian government, Dua Al Natour, his younger sister told The Jordan Times over the phone on Saturday.

“His colleagues left the airport without any trouble and they were the ones who informed us about his arrest,” she said, noting that her brother was an active member of pro-reform groups in Jordan.

His family has tried to contact him several times through different organisations but to no avail, the sister said.

Irbid MP Samir Oweis is following up on the case and is continuously informing the family of any developments that may surface, she added.
