Online users in Iran can now download a free computer game that allows players to "confront symbols of sedition," also known as Iran's most prominent opposition figures, according to Agence France Presse.

The flash-based game called "The Return of Mokhtar", in what AFP has described as "a shoddy knock off of Doom" challenges players to shoot at pro-reform figures from the 2009 disputed presidential election. Such figures include Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi who have been under house arrest since 2011, as well asex-president Mohammad Khatami.

The makers of the game are allegedly "youths faithful to the Islamic revolution" according to their own website.

However, the game has come under scrutiny due to the fact that is not licensed under Iranian law.

"Its producers did not put forward any requests for a licence. Therefore, the relevant authorities at the culture ministry, police and the judiciary will be informed," said Hossein Moazami, an official at Iran's computer and video games foundation to Iran's Arman Daily.

Iran's president Hassan Rouhani has even weighed in on the online game, saying he will help to resolve the issue.
