Naming an internet router after Daesh backfired spectacularly when a teenager in France landed himself in jail on charges of "sympathy for terrorism," AFP reported.
The young man named his private WiFi network "Daesh21," and it wasn't long before the 18-year-old found himself in court.
A neighbor saw the network pop up on the list of available connections, and reported it to police.
"There was no sympathy for terrorism! There was only the word 'Daesh21,'" said lawyer Karima Manhouli, adding that he intended to appeal the case.
"It was a stupid act by a young man of 18 who can't explain why he did it," he said.
"There was an investigation and searches but nothing was found. There is nothing to suggest (my client) shares this ideology. On the contrary, he strenuously denies it," Manhouli said.
The Dijon court handed the young man a suspended three-month jail sentence after he declined an offer to do 100 hours of community service instead.
