According to a new global index of charitable giving, Iraqis are the world's most generous people when it comes to helping strangers in need, Reuters reported.
In a recent poll conducted by the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) 81 percent of Iraqis reported helping someone they didn't know in the last month.
The poll found that of the 140 countries surveyed, the most generous people were often found in countries torn apart by war or other crises.
Although torn by civil war, Iraq is the world's most generous country towards strangers in need, according to a new global index of charitable giving.
Despite civil wars, Libya came in second this year, while Somalia ranked fourth.
"I think that the lesson here is societies are incredibly resilient and that large scale disasters tend to activate a collective humanitarian response," Adam Pickering, international policy manager at CAF, told Reuters.
In the World Giving Index - a combined measure of helping strangers, donations to charity, and time spent volunteering - Myanmar came in first, while the United States was second.
