Hair products and skin whitening creams are among in-demand products driving a beauty boom in the UAE....

...as Emiratis shelled out an average of more than Dhs1,100 ($300) on personal care last year, writes Amina Zia Massoud.

And hygiene and cosmetics firms look set to continue to clean up - with market research firm Euromonitor International forecasting that figure will rise 13 per cent a person by 2017.

The UAE’s beauty and cosmetics market is growing fast, it was revealed ahead of industry showcase Beautyworld Middle East 2013 in Dubai next month. While many of the most popular products are for women, spending by men on cosmetics and beauty products is also on the rise, organisers said yesterday.

According to Euromonitor International, men in the UAE are spending more money than ever on premium hair products. The firm’s research manager for the Middle East, Sana Toukan, said the male premium hair care market saw 25 per cent growth last year - partly due to the increase of specialised, tailored products available.

“Before multinational companies were investing in moisturising creams with skin whitening features but now you see more toners and anti-ageing creams with these features too,” said Toukan.

However, some traditional products are still doing well amid an influx of international brand names. The traditional fragrance of Arabian oud sells more in Saudi Arabia than any designer aftershave, Euromonitor found.

Beautyworld Middle East is at Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre from May 28 to 30.
