The son of Oman’s Grand Mufti Ahmad Al Khalili was stabbed by an expatriate over a dispute in Mawaleh district of Seeb province on Friday.

Omar Al Khalili, 17, is currently in a stable condition at Sultan Qaboos hospital. He sustained minor injuries on his arm and stomach.

The altercation happened when Al Khalili tried to stop an expatriate who insisted on entering a mosque with his dog.

The expatriate is now being questioned in police custody. Residents of Mawaleh say the expatriate’s dog had earlier caused disturbances in the usually quiet district.

The young man, who is also 17, could face up to three years in jail for attacking Al Khalili.

In October, two students sustained minor stab injuries on the Sultan Qaboos University campus during an altercation between them.
