A one-year-old girl was rescued by her father after being swept underwater when the migrant boat she was travelling in capsized in the Mediterranean today.

The youngster, named as Azeel, was pulled to safety by her father Mohammed after the boat overturned and she continued to cling to her dad as the pair were rescued by a Medecins Sans Frontieres rescue boat.

Azeel's mother also survived the shipwreck and the family are now safely on board rescue ship Dignity 1.

MSF have confirmed the family will be transferred to another boat before being brought to shore in Italy.

Azeel and her family were just some of the 600 or so passengers on board a boat which overturned off the coast of Libya earlier today. According to aid agencies 399 of the passengers have so far been rescued and 25 bodies have been recovered.
