Beirut Governor Ziad Chebib has ordered the closure of the city’s nightclubs, cafes and restaurants beginning Sunday, May 6 at 1 a.m., as the country gears up for the first parliamentary elections in nine years.

Chebib made the announcement Monday, specifically ordering owners of the affected establishments to be responsible for closing shop. The announcement did not stipulate punishments for those failing to comply.

The governor's announcement Monday comes two days after Prime Minister Saad Hariri issued an administrative memo calling on all public institutions to suspend operations on May 4 and May 7 to facilitate the parliamentary elections.

The memo was issued in compliance with a Cabinet decision Thursday, which was made at the request of President Michel Aoun.
