Dubai Women’s College hosted recently a series of debates focusing on ethical issues in the workplace. The sessions were attended by teams from Dubai Women’s College (DWC) and Dubai Men’s College (DMC), debating issues related to their Year 2 Ethics course.  Winning teams from each college were chosen based on understanding of the topic, delivery and teamwork.

Business and English teachers from both campuses, judged a total of 48 teams of evening and day students.  Ethical issues such as misuse of company resources, conflict of interest, bribery and nepotism were debated on and were perceived as authentic to the real work place. Available statistics and real-life experiences were used by team members to strengthen their positions. Teams observed debating protocol whilst presenting to an audience comprising Year 1 Bachelor students, fellow students, teachers and visiting dignitaries.

Asked afterwards of their experience, students agreed it was a valuable way to learn about issues they may face in the work place in the future. They also commented on the increased confidence they felt as a result of preparing and delivering an argument in front of fellow colleagues, teachers and visitors.

Dr. Monica Gallant, Chair of the Business Department stated, “This is an excellent event that not only highlights the importance of workplace ethics, but also develops debating skills which allow students to view issues from different perspectives.” Dr. Monica has further reiterated Dr. Howard Reed, Director of Dubai Women’s College, sentiments by stating that in a global environment such as Dubai, these skills are critical in developing strong Emirati leaders of the future.
