Dubai welcomed around 3.97 million passengers in May 2011

Around 3.97 million passengers passed through the world's fourth busiest airport for international passenger traffic in May. That compared with 3.65 million passengers in the same month a year earlier, according to the statement from Dubai Airports.

"Passenger volumes are on course to top 51 million by year end," Griffiths added. This despite political instability in the Middle East hitting passenger traffic in the region.

Dubai boasts the world's tallest skyscraper, a seven-star hotel and is enhancing its role as a global air hub with the opening of Al-Maktoum Airport, with a capacity for 160 million passengers.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has said trade, financial services and tourism sectors are to help the economy of Dubai to climb by around 3 per cent in 2011.
