employer of choice and an avid proponent of Emiratization, Dubai Aluminium Company “DUBAL” participated in the three-day Ras Al Khaimah “RAK” Exhibition for Education, Training & Employment 2011, which took place from 8 to 10 March 2011. The company used the event as a platform to attract young, talented UAE Nationals by promoting the employment opportunities offered by DUBAL’s pre-employment course “PEC” programmes (particularly the smelter and craft variants) and graduate trainee programme “GTP” while simultaneously educating the audience about DUBAL and enticing interest in a career within large industry.

Entirely state-owned, DUBAL fully supports the vision of H H Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum (Deputy Ruler of Dubai, UAE Minister of Finance and Chairman of DUBAL) regarding Emiratization of the country’s workforce. The company has established dedicated Emiratization strategies and policies, with the support of top management, to ensure that UAE Nationals are developed to take on challenging roles with increased responsibilities within the organization. “In effect, the DUBAL Human Resources department has adopted H H Sheikh Hamdan’s vision as its own, then executed various strategies and tactics to attract talented UAE Nationals, and modes to retain them,” says Mohammed Ali Al Owais (Manager: Organisation Development). “By participating in career-orientated events — such as the RAK Exhibition for Education, Training & Employment 2011 — we hope to entice young UAE Nationals to apply for employment at DUBAL, where they will benefit from the career growth opportunities offered by our ongoing industrial journey.”

Built on a 480-hectare site in Jebel Ali, DUBAL’s smelter complex has a hot metal production capacity in excess of one million metric tonnes per year. This makes the DUBAL complex not only the largest producer of primary aluminium in the Gulf region, but also one of the world’s largest single-site aluminium smelters. Employment is provided to approximately 4,000 people, of whom 15 per cent are currently UAE Nationals (the proportion at senior management level exceeds 70 per cent).

As part of DUBAL’s ongoing efforts to increase the proportional Emirati representation within the company’s workforce, the company DUBAL is an active participant in diverse career exhibitions throughout the year — from the annual Careers Show Exhibition “Careers UAE” through Emirate-specific events to career/open days held at various universities and colleges across the country. “These forums enable UAE Nationals in different fields of expertise to meet directly with recruiters and hiring managers from DUBAL and obtain information regarding the various training and career options available at our company,” continues Al Owais. “Each event also provides the opportunity to raise the corporate profile of DUBAL and attract the interest of high calibre candidates for recruitment.”
