The DMA organized a workshop on the Environment, Health and Safety Management System

As a part of the Department of Municipal Affairs (DMA)’s efforts to highlight projects and initiatives in different sectors and divisions, the Strategic Planning & Performance Management Office (SPPM) organized a workshop on the Environment, Health and Safety Management System (EHSMS).

Dr. Peter Colin Barnett Schuster, Consultant in the Municipal Affairs Governance Sector at the DMA started the workshop highlighting the general Abu Dhabi Emirate’s Environment, Health and Safety System under the umbrella of the Abu Dhabi Environment, Health & Safety Center (ADEHS), saying the (EHSMS) is an integrated system that takes into consideration all aspects related to protection of occupational, environment, health and safety in the work places. It includes series elements to facilitate the development of the policy, objectives, plans and arrangements necessary to improve performance in EHS issues

The workshop focused on internal EHSMS policy developed by the Department of Municipal Affairs for the Municipal System to regulate and supervise the environment, health & safety issues in the building and construction and commercial sectors in order to regulate and supervise these issues in these sectors and to identify the surrounding hazards at the workplace and the possible ways to control or prevent them of happening.

Dr. Barnett-Schuster referred to the Sector Regulatory Authorities which includes other governmental entities working under the umbrella of (ADEHS) and regulating the environment, health & safety issues in their own fields like the Higher Corporation for Specialized Economic Zones: for Industrial Sector, Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority: for Energy Sector, Department of Transport: for Transport Sector, Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority: for Tourism Sector, Health Authority-Abu Dhabi: for Health Sector, Center for Waste Management-Abu Dhabi: for Waste Sector and Abu Dhabi Education Authority: for Education Establishments.

The workshop looked into several important issues with a focus on the EHSMS policy in the Municipal System to ensure the proper safe and responsible implementation of the system in building and construction and commercial sectors in order to guarantee a safe living environment for the public and businesses and work force in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
