Yemen to operate one million phone lines by 2005

The Yemeni Telecommunication & Wireless Communication Public Corporation intends to implement a comprehensive infrastructure improvement plan with the objective of increasing the number of telephone lines in Yemen to one million by the year 2005.  

 

According to London’s Al-Sharq Al-Awsat daily, the plan is expected to satisfy the growing domestic demand for telephone services following recent urbanization trends and expanding commerce transactions throughout the country.  

 

Director general of the Telecommunication Corporation, Mohamed Al-Qasous, stated that the corporation has allocated seven billion Yemen rials ($42 million) for investments in vital telecommunication infrastructure projects through 2001.  

 

During the years 1996-2001, the corporation invested some YR 8.5 billion ($51.3 million) in various telecommunication development projects throughout Yemen, where local population presently stands at 15 million. — (MENA Report)
