Yemen’s overall domestic agricultural output for the year 2000 has been estimated at 8.3 million tons, according to the country’s Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation. In addition, total farmed territories throughout the country grew to 2.1 million hectares during the year, up from two million hectares in 1999, reported London based Al-Sharq Al-Awsat daily.
The Ministry also reported that 64,000 hectares were cultivated during the harvest season of 2000. Subsequently, this area yielded 760,000 tons of vegetables. In addition, 51,000 hectares were planted with grains, yielding 360,000 tons of cereal crops in 2000. –(Mena Report)
