ALBAWABA – The X platform, formerly Twitter, an online social media platform and microblogging service owned by Elon Musk, paid a total fine of $5.2 million in Brazil but transferred the money to wrong account. The fine was set to settle a dispute with a judge who banned the platform previously in the country over reactivating several banned accounts on the platform.

Alexandre de Moraes, judge of the Brazilian Supreme Court, who banned the platform in August 2024 in the country, said on Friday that the platform transferred the funds to the wrong account.

It is worth noting that the platform X was fined $5.2 million after failing to comply with the court orders. Musk and Moraes had an intensive months-long dispute, as hundreds of X accounts were banned for allegedly promoting hate speech and misinformation.

Moraes threatened earlier to ban X network in the country if Musk will not appoint a legal representative for his company, according to AFP. Musk was accused of reactivating several banned accounts on the platform.

The conflict between Moraes and Musk began in 2022 during the Brazilian general election when Moraes ordered X to deactivate the accounts of followers of former President Jair Bolsonaro.

As a result, Musk announced permanently closing X offices in the country while keeping the service available for the 22 million users and his company was fined with millions of dollars.

Judge Moraes confirmed that the funds were redirected after being sent to the wrong account.
