Some 6,000 workers went on strike at Turkey's largest glassmaker on Thursday, June 24, after talks broke down on a wide range of issues, their union said. Economic crisis has sparked soaring inflation in Turkey and is expected to produce a recession of at least three percent in 2001.
The statement from the Kristal-Is labor union said the action was taking place at five glass companies under holding company Sise-Cam ― Trakya Cam, Pasabahce Cam, Anadolu Cam, Cayirova Cam and Cam Elyaf.
It said disagreements with management included pay issues as well as employment of non-unionized workers, which it said made up 25-30 percent of the Sise-Cam workforce.
A statement from the union of glass employers accused the union of stubbornness and unreasonable demands. Sise-Cam is largely owned by major private bank Is Bank. ― (Reuters, Istanbul)
