When it comes to buying gifts for a significant other, some are all about romantic dinners and flowers, while others would rather take a more practical route and give something he or she can use everyday. And who couldn't use a little nudge toward a more healthy lifestyle? And if they're out of shape, nothing says "I love you" like a clear message that you care about their health and want to spend a long life with them.

Unfortunately, sometimes these good intentions for healthy gift-giving end up backfiring, and no one wants to end up left with hurt feelings. But there's a good way to give the gift of fitness that's not in the form of a gym membership: an activity tracker.

But even though wearable tech is a hot trend right now, you may still want to tread carefully when gifting someone a fitness tracker. Here are two great was to give a thoughtful gift, without having your good intentions misunderstood.

Smartwatches: a practical, trendy tech gift

Smart watches are hot right now, and many of them are also quite fashionable, like Apple's Watch Hermes. But they also offer many options in the form of built-in health and fitness tracking, including gyroscopes, accelerometers, heart rate sensors, and GPS. You can give your partner a practical, stylish gift, while also encouraging a healthier lifestyle by making use of some of the device's features.

Bling never hurts

If you don't want to go for a smart watch, many dedicated fitness trackers come disguised as bling and won't cramp your partner's style. The ultimate sparkly figness tracker is probably Misfit's Swarovski Activity Crystal collection. Available as a wrist band or a pendant, the accessories are encrusted with Swarovski crystals. Until you pick up its signal with a smartphone, no one would even guess it's a fitness tracker.

For guys or those who don't necessarily want a crystal-encrusted fitness device, there are several options that look like sleek wearables, complete with OLED displays, notifications, music control, and of course features for tracking health and activity. Trackers from Samsung, Misfit, Garmin and Jawbone all come to mind.

Gifts are all about showing someone how much you care for them. It's only natural that you want to spend as much time happy and healthy together. With a little thoughtfulness, you can give your partner the gift of health without inadvertently causing offense.
