Douglas Heisler was recently sworn in as the US Agency for International Development Representative (USAID) to the Republic of Yemen at the USAID headquarters in Washington, by Administrator Andrew S Natsios.
Heisler will oversee a $10 to $20 million portfolio in Yemen. The new USAID program focuses on basic health care, primary education and increased income and food security in selected poor rural areas. USAID will also support the government of Yemen's decentralization policy and democratic institutions through training for local government officials and election assistance.
USAID closed its Mission in Yemen in 1996 pursuant to restrictions on foreign aid. More recently, the Government of Yemen has supported the international response to terrorism following the September 11, 2001 attacks and the Al-Qaeda bombing of the USS Cole. The new USAID Office in Yemen will provide a development assistance component to the war on terrorism that is expected to produce positive results in Yemen. — (menareport.com)
