ALBAWABA - The US Department of Labor has announced this week’s unemployment insurance claims, which came at an unexpected 187,000 in initial filings, a volume not seen in almost 16 months, with 16,000 fewer claims compared to last week’s 203,000.

An unemployment claim is issued when a person is dismissed from their position with no fault of the employee, they are filed in the state department in hopes of a temporary monetary compensation; it is a strong indicator of the current state of the labor market and economy in general.

This week’s drop in claims comes against Dow Jones estimation of 208,000, as well as an interesting 26,000 drop in continuing claim rates. Totaling at 1.806 million.

These statistics come against expectations of recent decisions by the Federal Reserve to slow down economy in hopes to combat rescission, signaling labor strength even through big layoffs happening throughout many industries.

Housing, on the other hand, also showed positive optimism by the end of 2023; with Building Permits having a 1.9 percent monthly increase, reaching 1,495 million, 6.1 percent higher compared to December 2022’s figure of 1,409,000.
