ALBAWABA – Uber, the American multinational transportation company that provides ride-hailing services, courier services, food delivery, and freight transport, announced launching a new self-driving cars service in collaboration with Cruise, an American self-driving car company that tests and develops autonomous car technology.

Uber and Cruise collaboration

The two companies said that they will collaborate to launch this new self-driving service to Uber customers by 2025. Cruise, a subsidiary of General Motors, partnered with Uber for many years and worked on several projects.

Users of Uber application will be able to choose the new service that offers Cruise’s self-driving cars by next year, according to Bloomberg.

Dara Khosrowshahi, Uber CEO, said: “As the largest mobility and delivery platform, we believe Uber can play an important role in helping to safely and reliably introduce autonomous technology to consumers and cities around the world. We are thrilled to partner with Cruise and look forward to launching next year.”

Cruise confidence in the market

It is worth noting that Cruise aims to regain its strength and confidence in the market after it recently went through a major setback last October. The setback followed a collision with a pedestrian last year, leading regulators in California to revoke Cruise's its self-driving license.

“Cruise is on a mission to leverage driverless technology to create safer streets and redefine urban life,” said Marc Whitten, CEO of Cruise. He added: “We are excited to partner with Uber to bring the benefits of safe, reliable, autonomous driving to even more people, unlocking a new era of urban mobility.”

Uber shares decline

It is significant to point out that Uber shares fell by 4.4% to reach $70.05, after the collaboration announcement with Cruise.
