ALBAWABA - The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) signed three memorandums of understanding with specialized Chinese institutions in the field of peaceful nuclear energy.
The corporation revealed that it has signed the three memorandums with the Institute of Nuclear Energy Research, China National Nuclear Corporation Overseas, and the China Nuclear Energy Industry Corporation.
The memos envisage cooperation in nuclear energy operations, high-temperature gas-cooled reactors, nuclear fuel supplies, and investment.
The UAE is set to host the Climate Summit (COP28) this year. It aims to obtain 6 percent of its energy needs from nuclear sources as part of its plan to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
ENEC is currently developing the Barakah Nuclear Power Plants, the first multi-unit nuclear power project in the operational phase in the Arab world.
Upon their completion, the Barakah plants will comprise four reactors with a total capacity of 5,600 megawatts, equivalent to about 25 percent of the UAE's peak demand.
