The dime chain stores, which sell merchandise and products for one to two dirhams, have recently become widespread throughout the UAE. Products, previously sold for Dh 5-10, are now available at dime stores for only Dh 1-2. There are currently over 50 Dime stores operating throughout Dubai, and 30 are operating in Abu Dhabi, according to a report appearing recently in Al-Rai Al-Aam newspaper.
Dime stores could once be found only in cheap public markets. However they have recently moved into the more expensive shopping centers. The extremely slim profits earned by these stores have spread certain suspicions regarding their real income sources. As a result, the related trade and police authorities have decided to tighten control over the activities and transactions of the local dime stores. — (Albawaba-MEBG)
