US-based Tyson foods has issued a statement saying that it was not involved in alleged illegal trading with Iraq. On April 14, Reuters ran a story about the US Treasury settling charges with several companies alleged to have violated trade sanctions with Iraq. Tyson Foods was listed among those companies.

While the story is factually correct in stating Tyson Foods settled charges in 2000, the alleged activity occurred at Hudson Foods in 1996, before the Tyson Foods acquisition of that company in 1998.

The settlements and fines, imposed on 57 companies, total nearly $1.3 million. The Treasury Department, oversaw the penalties as part of its role enforcing US sanctions against terrorists, drug dealers and foreign nations. Companies involved include ChevronTexaco, Wells Fargo and Wal-Mart. — (menareport.com)
