Turkey’s Ozaltin Construction Company has been selected by the Jordanian government to build the long-delayed Wihdeh dam on the Yarmouk River. The $85 million project will establish a 600-meter-long dam along the Jordanian-Syrian border. Work has a target date for completion set for the second half of 2005.

The plan, which suffered a 13-year-old delay because of regional political tensions and lack of funds, is part of the kingdom's strategy to cope with a chronic water shortage. The new structure will provide the Kingdom with 80 percent of the 225 million cubic meters of water stored in the dam and 25 percent of the power that will be generated by the project. It was agreed that Syria would take 20 percent of the stored water and 75 percent of the power.

Established in 1965, Ozaltin first began operations as a General Construction Contracting firm. The company is now additionally involved in the tourism and agribusiness sectors and has experience in building highways, bridges, tunnels, harbours, airports, urban infrastructure, waste water treatment plants, housing, hotels, hospitals, dams, irrigation systems, power plants and energy lines. — (menareport.com)
