ALBAWABA - Turkish Airlines has introduced a new culinary feature to its in-flight dining by offering “The Oldest Bread,” made from Einkorn and Emmer wheats—believed to be the most ancient varieties from Anatolia, a region known for its rich history and ancient civilizations.
The new menu item debuted on September 22, 2024, on flight TK3 from Istanbul to New York. Passengers in Intercontinental Business Class can enjoy the bread, served warm with butter and olive oil before their main meal.
Turkish Airlines’ catering partner, Turkish DO&CO, prepares the bread fresh, and its development involved consultation with noted Turkish culinary historians Ömür Akkor and academic Çetin Şenkul, in an effort by the airline to showcase Turkish culture by blending historical culinary traditions with modern dining experiences.
Prof. Ahmet Bolat, Chairman of the Board and Executive Committee of Turkish Airlines commented in a press statement: "As a flag carrier known for offering world-class flavors to our guests, we are thrilled to present our business class travelers with the world’s oldest bread, cultivated from ancient wheat discovered in Anatolia. This bread, deeply rooted in Turkish cuisine and global culinary heritage, represents our efforts to merge the past and present in our guests' inflight experience."
The launch was accompanied by the premiere of a film highlighting the bread’s historical significance. The film, created with the support of Türkiye’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism, was filmed at Göbeklitepe, Karahantepe, and along the Euphrates River.
