ALBAWABA - Discord is the talk of social media including X (formerly known as Twitter) after Turkish and Russian authorities banned the voice chat and messaging service over online bullying, the blackmailing of children, and the violation of the law.

According to Militarny, Russia’s internet and media regulator sent Discord administrators a request to remove 947 "illegal materials" including illegal activities with minors, LGBTQ content, suicide, and drug content. Russian users have reported facing issues with the service for the past two months.

The platform in question is popular among gamers, crypto investors, and communities because it brings people together from all over the world and allows them to chat about similar interests, do business together, and learn from each other.

Moreover, the platform was also put to a halt due to claims that both the Ukrainian and Russian military have been using it as a means of communication during Russia's ongoing aggression on Ukraine.

For Turkey, Discord was banned due to failing to stop certain groups targeting the grooming of children, blackmail, and cyberbullying deeming it an unsafe place for minors, as reported by Turkey Today.

At first, authorities had no plans of banning Discord in its entirety and considered introducing barriers to the platform to protect users from the incidents above.

Take in mind that authorities are still trying to find solutions to bring the platform back and working in Turkey to offer a safer online environment.
