The High Customs Council revealed that the trade deficit widened in May from the previous month by 4.62% to $453m. For the first five months as a whole, the trade deficit was 7.6% narrower than for the equivalent period in 1999, at $2.2bn. Exports for the year to May 2000 amounted to $296m, up 27.6% on the same period in 1999, while imports in the first five months of the year were $2.5bn compared to $2.6bn a year earlier.
