The Syrian government has recently announced plans for the establishment of a technology city in Tartous, along the Syrian coast. The new city is expected to include various electronic institutes, scientific laboratories and research centers, much like America’s Silicon Valley, reported Al-Sharq Al-Awsat daily.
Facilities will be equipped with highly developed computer equipment as well as state-of-the-art telecommunication systems. Investors involved in the projects include telecommunications companies from Malaysia, Russia, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Europe.
A senior executive in the Syrian Ministry of Planning estimated the costs of the projects at $200 million. Feasibility studies are currently being completed regarding the program. —(MENA Report)
