The award-winning National Central Cooling Co. (P.J.S.C) - Tabreed - and Abu Dhabi University have inked a deal where Tabreed will supply district cooling services to the university's new campus in Khalifa City, Abu Dhabi.

Ali Saeed Bin Harmal, Chairman of Abu Dhabi University's Executive Board, confirmed the significance of the project, "A new campus is considered an inevitable necessity in the educational advancement of any university, and we trust this project will help us earn academic distinction for Abu Dhabi University in the United Arab Emirates and the Middle East region." Bin Harmal added: "Tabreed has been chosen in light of its renowned accomplishments in providing district cooling services to large and complex developments."

The setup of centralised plants used in district cooling systems achieves economies of scale which have a tangible impact upon energy consumption, building space requirements and capital expenditure.

Dany Safi, Tabreed's CEO said: "It gives us a great pleasure to team up with Abu Dhabi University and to provide them with our services.  The new campus was designed based on the latest technologies used in educational developments and now, by connecting to district cooling, Abu Dhabi University will join a number of other prestigious educational institutions that benefit from district cooling as well, such as Harvard and MIT."

"Many universities in the UAE have studied district cooling technology since its emergence in the late 1990s, pioneered in the region by Tabreed," said Safi. The Abu Dhabi University will have its own facility where engineering students can study first hand how their own four million square foot facility has become so energy efficient.

Tabreed has recently signed a Dh3 billion deal with Dubai Municipality to serve district cooling services to Dubai Metro Project and over the last two months, Tabreed has signed a number of high profile developments like Fujairah and Ajman's tallest towers and Khalidiyah Mall in Abu Dhabi. The company has also won two gold awards in the United States from IDEA, the International District Energy Association, for having the highest number of spaces cooled and the highest number of buildings connected in 2004.

District cooling is now widely used throughout the UAE and has been used around the world since it was invented in the late 1800s, piping chilled water from a centralised plant to a range of residential, commercial and government buildings. Landlords are attracted to the maintenance-free, economic and environmentally friendly cooling benefits of the technology, while tenants enjoy reduced ambient noise and better temperature control in their homes, making it the perfect solution to all cooling requirements.
