Syria comes third in the Arab world in apples and citrus production and expectations put this season production of citrus at 750,000 tons while apples put at 300,000 tons, a report said Friday. "The current situation of citrus fields, mainly situated in the coastal area, is promising of a very good season probably by about 750,000 tons," Director of the Agrarian Affairs at the Ministry of Agriculture, Abdul Mouein Qadmani, told Al-Thawra daily.
He noted that Syria comes third in this sector following Egypt and Morocco.
Qadmani considered orange as the most important kind of citrus in Syria, noting that it occupies about 57% of citrus cultivated area and it is possible for Syrians to get fresh orange most of the year, starting from mid October to mid January.
"Apples production for the season is estimated at 300,000 tons and total number of apple trees put at 13.8 million while its cultivation is centered in Damascus countryside, Homs in central Syria and Sweida, in the south," he added.
