Syria signs US$64 million deal to upgrade train service

The General Establishment for Syrian Railroad on Wednesday signed an agreement with the Korean company of Rotem on importing 10 transit trains that can carry 285 passengers in each compartment and with a designed speed of 160 kilometers per hour.

 

In a statement to SANA, the Director General of the establishment, Abdul Men’am al-Bam, noted that the contract amounts to US$ 64 million and will be carried out in the second half of 2006.

 

He pointed out that trains will be run on the railway from Aleppo to each of Lattakia on the Syrian coast, Damascus, south Syria and Qamishli, northeastern Syria.

 

Rotem has two plants and two R&D centers. Plants are located in Changwon and Uiwang. Central R&D center is located in Uiwang and Technology Research Institute is located in Yongin. Rotem manufactures all kinds of trains such as EMUs, high-speed trains, light rail vehicles, locomotives, passenger coaches, freight wagons and etc. with about 3,800 professionals including 600 R&D staffs.
