Syria receives money from Russia

Syria received an unspecified number of Syrian pounds on Friday from Russia through Damascus International Airport. Notably, in January, the Central Bank of Syria announced the unfreezing of bank accounts after the Assad regime's retreat.

During the regime of Al Assad, bank notes used to be printed in Russia, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).

After the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad collapsed in December 2024, the Syrian forces took control of the capital, Damascus. Reports indicated that Assad fled to Russia, following 13 continuous years of war and over six decades of Assad family rule.

According to Reuters, all bank accounts were unfrozen, including those belonging to businessmen linked to former President Bashar al-Assad.

The transitional new government ordered banks to freeze accounts in an effort to monitor financial flows in and out of the country.

As a result, the Syrian pound traded at 9,850 to the US dollar and remained strong against inflation and liquidity.

This move to unfreeze accounts is expected to help revitalize and support the country’s economy. No further details were provided about the money that arrived from Russia to Syria today, nor was the exact amount specified.
