Syria's storage of wheat has reached at more than 7 million tons, sources at the General Institution for Trading and Manufacturing Wheat said. According to SANA, General Director of the Institution Suliman Nasir said that the institution agreed with Tunisia to sell 125,000 tons of solid wheat during 2007 in line with the international prices so Syria becomes the only Arab country that is self –sufficient of wheat production and exports to the other countries.
"3 million tons were bought from peasants and producers in 2006 and 1.5 million of solid wheat were exported to some Arab and foreign countries, Mr. Nasir was quoted as saying. He said "There was an agreement with Jordon to sign protocol to the amount of 500,000 tons after selling to the Jordanians 100,000 tons while there was another agreement with Egypt to export 700,000 tons of wheat."
Quantities were also exported to Iraq, Turkey and Italy through agreement with companies representing these countries.
