The first center for technological research in a GCC country will be set up in Abu Dhabi. Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al-Nahyan, the UAE minister of higher education and scientific research, has announced that his ministry had signed an agreement to this effect with a prominent Swiss research foundation, reported Gulf News.
According to Sheikh Nahyan, the research center will serve the entire Gulf region, and will reduce the region’s reliance on outside expertise and technology. Initially, Swiss researchers will supervise work at the center, teaching local scientists modern techniques and research methodologies.
Sheikh Nahyan added that the new center will provide a facility at which students from local universities would be able to conduct research or develop their research techniques. The center, he said, will replicate several of the most sophisticated centers existing in other countries.
Sheikh Nahyan said that agreements had already been signed with several Swiss colleges specializing in scientific research and technology. They will host students from the continuing their education in electronics and medical engineering. — (Albawaba-MEBG)
