The Suez Canal Authority has recently announced that beginning on July 26, large freight vessels carrying as much as 220,000 tons of cargo have been able to pass through the canal.

Ahmad Ali Fadel, head of the authority, notified all international firms which use the canal about the capacity expansion, according to KsaToday daily.

Until now, the maximum tonnage that a vessel could transfer through the canal stood at 200,000 tons.

Fadel stated that the new freight capacity is part of an expansion project to widen the canal which began in 1996. He added that estimated costs of this project stand at approximately 757 million Egyptian pounds ($191.7 million). –(MENA Report)
