Ethiopia will be receiving 85 percent of its oil supply from Sudan starting in 2002, reported Ethiopian Television. According to an agreement between the two countries’ governments, Sudan will export 120,000 million tons of oil and 36,000 million tons of kerosene annually to Ethiopia.
The agreement also specifies that Ethiopia will be permitted to build a fuel depot in Sudan so as to ensure a steady supply of oil and kerosene by road.
According to the general manager of the Ethiopian Petroleum Organization, Sisay Gebretsadik, Ethiopia will save millions of dollars annually by importing fuel from Sudan rather than from sources outside of Africa.
Sudan, which has been an oil exporter since 1999, currently produces 220,000 barrels of oil per day. – (MENA Report)
