Software piracy cost the Kuwaiti IT sector more than eight million dollars in 2000, down $13 million in 1999, reported the Business Software Alliance, an international industry pressure group.
BSA attributed the fall in lost income to the enforcement of an intellectual property law that was passed by the Kuwaiti government in 1999. Violators of the law are subject to fines and prison sentences of up to a year.
Nonetheless, estimated BSA, some 80 percent of software used in Kuwait still is pirated. – (MENA Report)
