So far in 2005: Algeria food imports – US$1.75 billion

Algeria imported during the first six months of the current year food products by value of $1.751 billion compared to $1.762 billion in the equivalent period last year, reported the July 25 edition of Al-Khabar newspaper. The cost of import of all food items rose, except for coffee and grains.

 

The highest increase was registered in the imports of meat, which amounted to about $109 million, say a 126.75% rise compared to the equivalent period last year.  Sugar imports went up by 21.48% and stood at about $149 million compared to $123 million in the first half of 2004. Meanwhile, grain imports' value surpassed $685 million. Imports of milk and its products came to about $385 million, while dried vegetables imports totaled more than $94 million.
