According to Egypt’s ministry of public enterprise, the overall volume of non-petroleum goods transported via both sea and land routes reached 48.2 million tons between July 2000 and June 2001. This indicates a six percent increase in comparison to the corresponding period the previous year, when the figure stood at 45.2 million tons.
The four large ports of Alexandria/Dikhaila, Damiatta, and Port Said on the Mediterranean, and a total of nine ports on the Red Sea carry almost all of Egypt’s foreign trade. During the month of June 2001, non-petroleum goods transported by sea freight amounted to 4.62 million tons, compared to 4.12 million tons in June 2000.
Non-oil commodities transported by air in June dropped 14 percent as compared to the same month last year. During June 2001, 9,600 tons were delivered via airfreight, while in June 2000, air transported goods reached 11,200 tons. — (Mena Report)
