Singapore on Tuesday October 23 said it had been officially notified that the World Trade Organization (WTO) will push ahead with a crucial ministerial meeting in Doha, Qatar next month.

Singapore had been named as an alternative venue due to security concerns over the US-led military attacks on Afghanistan, but WTO officials have expressed determination to hold the talks in Qatar despite its proximity to the battle zone.

"Singapore is relieved and pleased that the WTO has reaffirmed its determination to hold the 4th Ministerial Meeting in Doha on 9-13 November 2001," said a statement from the Ministry of Trade and Industry. "The (WTO) Director-General has confirmed that Singapore is no longer needed as a fallback," it added. — (AFP, Singapore)
