The Department of Civil Aviation Dubai has awarded Siemens Dematic (SD) Middle East two major contracts to develop the cargo and baggage handling systems at Dubai International Airport.
The contracts set to further consolidate the existing strong trade relations between Germany and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and coincides with the Dubai International Aerospace Exhibition 2003.
When completed in 2007, the multi-storey Dubai Cargo Mega Terminal will be capable of handling 1.2 million tons per annum in cargo throughput. Currently, the Dubai Cargo Village handles in excess of 850,000 tons per annum and growth forecasts show that by early 2004, additional major cargo facilities will be required in order to satisfy demands and consequently plans are underway to implement the first stage of the Cargo Mega Terminal.
Siemens Dematic will install an IT software and hardware system for the entire material handling system with an easy to operate man-machine interface. The system has to be designed for continuous operation 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
The Baggage Handling Equipment will serve Emirates Airline as a hub to achieve a Minimum Connecting Time (MCT) of 45 minutes. A connection to a future Remote Stand Baggage Unit (RSBU) has to be taken into consideration.
The new system will be implemented in steps. Phase A will be completed seven years after contract signing, whereby Terminal 3 and Concourse 2 should go in operation after three years. Two years after that half the system in Concourse 3 will be completed and after two further years the other half of Concourse will go live.
After completion in 2008, Dubai International Airport is expected to handle 40 million passengers per year by 2010. Peak hour traffic is 13,500 passengers per hour. The system has to be designed for continuous operation 24 hours a day, 365 days. — (menareport.com)
