Dubai Internet City (DIC) announced on Sunday that it had chosen Siemens Business Services as its provider of technical infrastructure. Siemans will use Cisco Systems and Sun Microsystems technology.
Commenting, Mohammed Al Gergawi, the DIC chairman, said these are the first major contracts to be awarded by the organization. DIC officials were reluctant to disclose the value of the contracts, though hinted that the figure runs in the millions of dollars. Neither did they reveal whether any other companies might participate.
The three companies will be installing a data center, telecommunications network, internet conectivity infrastructure, and an electronic payment system.
Mohammed Rizvi, director of sales of Siemens UAE IT division, said that the entire structure will be up and running by the DIC launch date, scheduled for the end of the year.
Siemen’s will provide telecommunications expertise. It has worked in the past with Etisalat and Kuwait’s Watanyia Telecom.
Cisco will bring in its "New World" networking solutions, which compounds data and voice communication. Its technology is already used in a number of public and private networking projects in the Middle East, including www.sheikhmohammed.co.ae, the UAE Ministry of Health and the Arab Bank.
Sun Microsystems is supplying the hardware platform and software applications, which will include the iPlanet suite of enterprise server applications. ― (Albawaba-MEBG)
