Turks who wish to sacrifice sheep at the Eid Al-Adha Muslim feast can turn to the Internet and ask a state institution to carry out the ceremony on their behalf in return for credit card payment, officials said Friday, March 2.
Those interested can just fill out a form and authorize the withdrawal of 75 million Turkish lira (some $83) from their accounts, the state-run Turkish Aviation Institution (THK), which organizes the campaign, announced.
"The sacrificial animals will be slaughtered in line with religious requirements in a hygienic environment and in the presence of a notary," the statement said. "The documents certifying the sacrifice will be send to the e-mail addresses of the citizens in question," it added.
The institution also pledged to distribute the meat of the sacrificed animals to needy people, which is the core requirement of the practice.
Turkish law authorizes the THK to gather the hides of sheep and cattle sacrificed during the Eid Al-Adha feast in an effort to secure additional funds for the institution from the hides' sale to the leather industry. — (AFP, Ankara)
