Sharjah International Airport will see an influx of 200 additional weekly flights as airlines commence their summer schedule, the airport has said.
The increase in weekly flights will come from a mixture of commercial and cargo operations including Sri Lankan Airlines, Qatar Airways and Saudia Cargo. Runway repairs at Dubai International are likely to be adding to the rise in numbers. The number of flights out of Dubai International is dropping by 26 per cent until July 20 due to capacity constraints with some airlines, including Jet Airways, shifting to Sharjah International.
“Sharjah International Airport is gearing up to meet with this new demand, both with regards to resource and infrastructure. Recently, the airport appointed 100 passport control officers, and opened 20 additional check-in counters to ease the travel and immigration formalities, as well as providing additional temporary gates to ensure the smooth and fast completion of the procedures,” stated Ali Salim Al Midfa, Chairman of Sharjah Airport Authority.
Sharjah International reported an eight per cent increase in passenger traffic over the first quarter with 2.25 million passengers travelling through the airport.
